The Silverton Gaol Museum has so much of the region’s history crammed into the 19 cells, hallways and courtyards, it’s impossible to give an accurate representation with words. With topics ranging from local football clubs and outback lodges, to sewing machines, wedding dresses, movie cameras and musical instruments, there’s something to amuse and interest even the most worldly-wise traveller.

The museum is located in the old gaol building, which has an interesting history of its own. In addition to getting a sense of the harsh life of an early outback prisoner by virtue of the imposing original surroundings, there are extensive displays of objects, photographs and memorabilia relating to both Silverton and Broken Hill. Visitors can step back in time as they view the wealth of objects in the extensive collection.

Silverton has a fascinating history of boom and bust but today it is a vibrant tourist location with historic buildings, galleries, a walking trail, hotel and coffee shop. The town has also been a location for countless movies and television commercials, most notably Mad Max 2. Also be sure to check out the other ‘Outback Museum’ in town, the Silverton School Education Museum.
