Don’t be fooled by local references to ‘The Railway Museum’, located across road from the Broken Hill Visitor Information Centre, the Sulphide Street Railway & Historical Museum is a large complex consisting of much more than a display of Railway memorabilia. Visitors can discover broad aspects of Broken Hill history ranging from fascinating hidden gems such as old surgical equipment, to detailed interpretation of important local stories such the Battle of Broken Hill Picnic Train Attack of 1915.

Originally started in the early 1980s as a final resting place for the stories and locomotives of the Silverton Tramway Company, the large site has expanded over the years and now also incorporates a Hospital Museum, Migrant Museum, Transport Pavilion, Tess Alfonzi Triple Chance Mineral Collection, and for the researchers there’s a substantial Archives Room to explore.

Great for visitors with only a short time in Broken Hill, a visit to the Railway Museum will give you a broad glimpse of the wealth of history and stories associated with the region without sacrificing the opportunity to dive in to several important histories in detail.
